Backcountry 101 - Youth Avalanche Education

This course is specifically designed for youth new to the backcountry. Heavy on practical, usable skills and local information, this is a great place for students to start building their avalanche skills. Recommended age range for this course is 13-17 years old. Alyeska Resort makes an ideal setting for young backcountry users, allowing BC 101 participants to maximize field and practice time. Students will finish the course with understanding of:

  • Avalanche formation
  • Recognition of red flags for avalanche hazard
  • Safe travel techniques
  • Self-help and backcountry rescue
  • Decision-making
  • Terrain analysis
  •  Interaction with local avalanche professionals & online resources

Course Time: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (8 hours)
