Avalanche Level 1 Refresher

This workshop reviews Level 1 curriculum and is meant for backcountry users who have received some avalanche safety training but are not interested in repeating the full Level 1 course. The classroom session at AAS offices in Anchorage precedes a full day in the field in Turnagain Pass (specific locations chosen based on conditions at the time of the course). Participants can expect review of the following skills:

  • Rescue techniques and new technology
  • Transceiver use and practice
  • Terrain analysis
  • Snow stability evaluation
  •  Decision-making
  • Route selection and travel procedures

Prerequisites: Participants must have already completed a Level 1 class. Prior to the start of the course, students should re-read Avalanche Essentials and/or Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain, track Turnagain Pass area weather, and come to the workshop prepared with specific questions and areas of focus.

Course Time: 3 hour evening lecture in AAS classroom, one full (8 hour) field day

Avalanche Observers/Level 2 Refresher

Participants in this workshop will review documentation and record keeping as per the Snow, Weather, and Avalanches: Observation Guidelines for Avalanche Programs in the United States (SWAG) handbook. The program is geared toward backcountry users who submit (or would like to submit) observations to their local forecasting centers, and for those seeking to become avalanche professionals and wanting to review Level 2 material before enrolling in a Level 3 course. Topics covered include:

  • Standard field weather/stability observations and recording standards
  • Standard snow profile procedures and recording standards
  • Demonstration and documentation of stability tests and results
  • Study plot observations and recording standards

Prerequisites: Completed Level 2 course.

Course Time: 3 hour evening lecture in AAS classroom, one full (8 hour) field day
